- Head southeast on Nickerson Blvd, then turn left onto 56th Ave. Turn right onto Lorraine St, then turn right onto 30th Ave. We’re right on the corner behind Enterprise Rent-A-Car, at 2901B N Lorraine St # A.
- Head east on 82nd Ave, then turn right onto Plum St. Take the 3rd exit on the roundabout onto 56th St, then turn right onto Lorraine St. From there, continue as in the above directions.
How Much Local History Do You Know?
Nickerson, Kansas, was established in 1872 when the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway extended its line to the area, marking the beginning of what would become a thriving community. The town was named in honor of Thomas Nickerson, who served as president of the railroad company during that pivotal time. While the railway brought the promise of growth and opportunity, the first permanent houses were not constructed until 1875, the same year a schoolhouse was erected to serve the growing population.
By June 1879, Nickerson had grown sufficiently to incorporate as a city, with Dr. L. A. Reeves serving as its first mayor. The city’s inaugural council included M. McCormick, C. S. Morse, J. O. Smith, and H. R. Nickerson, while other early officials, such as police judge Olmstead, treasurer C. F. Heath, and marshal J. D. Reed helped establish the foundations of local governance. These early leaders worked to build the infrastructure and community spirit that would define Nickerson for generations to come.
The late 1870s were formative years for the young city. In 1878, the Nickerson Argosy newspaper was founded by Sargent & Brown, providing residents with news and a sense of community connection. The following year, a significant milestone was reached with the completion of a wooden bridge across the Arkansas River, improving transportation and commerce for the region. These early developments laid the groundwork for Nickerson’s continued growth and established it as an important community in Reno County.
